You may be worried about the costs associated with attending College, like buying books or travel expenses. Don’t worry, as a student aged between 16 and 18 you may be eligible for financial support. Depending on your financial circumstances and your attendance at College, here’s some of the support you could receive…

Student Bursary

Our Bursary for students aged 16 to 18, who meet set eligibility criteria, could help with travel to and from College, lunches, essential equipment, uniforms & compulsory trips. The amount you could receive depends on your family’s household income. See the guidelines below for more information.

Care to Learn (C2L) – Childcare Costs

If you are a young parent you may be eligible for help with childcare costs of up to £160 per child per week. For more information about this support, please contact the Care to Learn helpline on 0800 121 8989 for further information and an application pack

Army FE Bursary

If you’re planning on joining the army after College, then you may be entitled to receive an Army FE Bursary, aimed at students on full time courses. You could receive £1,000 per year during your studies and a further £1,000 on completion of Phase One Army training. Please note that selection for the Army FE Bursary Scheme is at the discretion of the British Army.

NUS Extra

As a College student you can apply for a NUS Extra student discount card. It costs £11 and gives you exclusive discounts, promotions & competition offers. Companies supporting NUS discounts range from Miss Selfridge to Odeon, Amazon to Ticketmaster, and many more. For more information, visit nus.org.uk.

Travel Costs : Scholar’s Permit

The Scholars Concessionary Permit is £5 and allows students to travel between home and College by bus, rail or metrolink at a discounted rate. For more information visit tfgm.com.

Travel Costs : Season Tickets

Train, tram and bus operators also offer discounted season tickets for students. These tickets can be used for multiple journeys and can be cheaper than buying single tickets each time. You can also travel further with a bus season ticket, not just between home and college.

Travel Costs : System One Bus Savers

If you are aged 16 – 26 and in full time education you can buy student bus tickets, which are available as weekly, monthly and annual passes. These will allow you to travel on any bus at anytime. For more information, visit systemonetravelcards.co.uk
