Course Details

The course is designed to prepare students for entry into Higher Education or for employment in the field of science including some health related professions as listed in Progression. This course is not suitable for entry into Nursing, Midwifery, Occupational Therapy or Medicine. Entry to Dentistry and Pharmacy may be possible if the applicant is already qualified as a practitioner in the career pathway they wish to follow.

Entry Requirements for Access to HE Applied Sciences

Although no formal qualifications are required for these programmes, GCSE Maths and/or English at Grade C would be desirable for all Access courses pathways. You will be asked to undertake an informal literacy and numeracy assessment and submit a personal statement prior to interview, in order to help us to identify the most appropriate point of entry to your studies.

Assessment for Access to HE Applied Sciences

Students are assessed continuously throughout the year. Credits are gained for each module through assignments and a wide range of assessments such as academic essays, presentations and project research. Individual Level 3 units are graded at Pass, Merit and Distinction, to a maximum of 45 level credits.

Progression from Access to HE Applied Sciences

Satisfactory completion of the programme may allow progression to a Degree or HND in Environmental Sciences, Biological/Biomedical Sciences, Chemistry and Physics. A large variety of Health related professions e.g. Paramedic, Radiography, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Orthotics and Prosthetics, Sports Science, Optometry, Podiatry, Operating Department Practitioner, Dental Hygienist Dental Technology and Biomedical Science.
