Qualifications Explained

Whether you would like to enhance your career, get back into education after a break, or you would like to study a degree level course without the expense of university, Trafford College could have a course for you. Take a look at the types of courses we have on offer to decide which one is right for you.

Access to Higher Education Diplomas

Trafford College understands that you may have been out of education for a while and that you may not have the qualifications to directly start on a higher education programme. This is why our Access to Higher Education courses are designed to prepare you with the skills and knowledge you need to progress onto higher level courses.

Levels 1 / 2

Students beginning their Access course on Levels 1 or 2 will study the Access Preparation Year. Each level takes 1 year to complete and the course provides learners with the underpinning skills and knowledge needed to prepare them for a specialised and more advanced Access programme.

Level 3

At Level 3, students will study a more advanced programme of work for 1 year, which will specialise in a particular pathway (see access and higher education course pages). Students will explore a range of modules related to particular fields, which will prepare them for further study, either at Trafford College or university.

No matter what level you start at, our experienced tutors will teach you at a pace and style that is right for you, and will give you specialised guidance in a stimulating environment.

Higher Education

Foundation Degrees (FNDs)

Trafford College’s Foundation Degree (FND) programmes are delivered in partnership with universities, and are designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge for a particular area of work. These flexible courses allow students to study and work at the same time, and are ideal for people who are looking to develop their careers. Equivalent to the first two years of a university degree course, students often top-up to a full honours degree at university, saving thousands on tuition fees.

HNC / HND

Higher National Certificates (HNC) and Higher National Diplomas (HND) are work-related programmes with a focus on practical learning. They provide a pathway into a particular career, help improve job prospects, and can be a stepping stone onto a full degree programme. They are often studied part time alongside employment.

Professional Courses

Our range of professional courses are designed for people who are already in a particular area of work or are pursuing employment within a certain sector and would like to gain a formal qualification with a view to develop their career. Often studied in the evening, students could also benefit from gaining entry onto professional bodies. We work with a variety of professional bodies including:

  • AAT (Association of Accounting Technician’s)
  • CIPD (Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development)
  • CILEx (Chartered Institute of Legal Executives)
  • CIEH (Chartered Institute of Environmental Health)
