Motor Vehicle
Get your career into gear and choose a course in Motor Vehicle. You can decide to specialise in vehicle maintenance and repair by studying topics such as fault diagnostics, vehicle components and engine principles. Alternatively you can study vehicle paint spraying where you will learn a variety of skills including mixing and matching paint colours to carrying out complete refinishing operations. By working in our specialist motor vehicle garages and body finishing workshops you will develop essential practical skills in a realistic working environment to get your career into poll position.
Motor Vehicle courses take place at the Technology Centre.
The course consists of mandatory and optional units.
The mandatory units include:
- Operation of Vehicle Systems
- Vehicle Engine Principles, Operation, Service and Repair
- Vehicle Fault Diagnosis and Rectification
- Vehicle Technology Project

- Vehicle Electrical and Electronic Principles
- Petrol Injection Systems for Spark Injection Systems
- Diesel Fuel Injection Systems for Compression Ignition Engines
- Vehicle Engine Transmission Systems
- Vehicle Suspension, Steering and Breaking Systems
- Mathematics for Technicians
- Engineering Design
- Properties and Applications of Engineering Materials
- Routine Vehicle Maintenance
- Vehicle Layout and Operation of Systems

The aim of the course is to give students wishing to gain employment in the Body Repair/ Refinishing industry a recognised qualification.
Areas of study include: Work Safely and Effectively, Vehicle Paint Application, Vehicle Paint Materials, Vehicle Paint Equipment, Vehicle Preparation and Technical Information.
Functional Skills: Students will also be required to carry out Key Skills qualifications in Communication and Application of Number at Level 1

- Operating Principles & Maintenance of Light Vehicle Electrical & Electronic System
Functional Skills: Students will also be required to carry out Key Skills qualifications in Communication and Application of Number at Level 1.
The course is a mixture of practical and theoretical knowledge. Approximately 25% of the week will be classroom based

This level 3 qualification covers technical needs for today's motor vehicle repair industry, including preparation and application procedures and the diagnosis and rectifying of paint faults. It provides essential knowledge for vehicle body and paint operators working on a wide range of vehicles in all types of garages, dealerships and specialist body and paint businesses.
It is a learning programme which involves students studying both the theory and practical aspects of the following:
Carrying out complete refinishing operations
Mixing and matching paint colours
Identifying and rectifying paint defects and faults
Students also gain a broad knowledge and understanding of health and safety in the workplace and other skills associated with working in a garage

The course consists of a mix of theory training with 4 online tests and a number of practical tasks on Advanced Chassis; Braking; Transmission and Electrical Systems. A portfolio of evidence is required which supports the tasks undertaken. The course is aimed at the diagnostic aspect of the vehicles and builds upon the knowledge gained at Levels 1 and 2.
