With more people taking an active approach to their health and fitness, our courses are designed to give you the knowledge and expertise to take advantage of this opportunity. By learning in our state-of-the-art fitness facilities, which include an all-weather AstroTurf pitch and fully equipped sports hall and gym, you will have the opportunity to explore a range of career possibilities such as sports coaching, leisure facility management and even uniformed services.
Sport courses take place at the Altrincham site.
Who is the programme for?
Students who wish to enter any of the uniformed services including those who have aspirations of entry at Officer level in the armed services, or those who wish to progress onto university. This programme is ideally suited for students who are seeking a mainly academic experience with some practical input in order to better prepare themselves for service life. Students wishing to experience a disciplined and organised environment and to prepare them for working life will also benefit from this course.
What is the programme structure?
18 units of study which are taught through classroom lecturers, discussions, presentations and practical activity. The delivery of the programme will be supported through an interactive teacher/student forum and downloads of work is accessed through the student internet. Further information about the National Certificate and National Award will be discussed at interview.
What does the programme include?
There are 6 core units which must be taken:
- Government, Policies and the Public Services
- Team Leadership in the Uniformed Public Services
- Citizenship, Contemporary Society and the Public Services
- Team Development in Public Services
- Understanding Discipline within the Uniformed Services
- Diversity and Public Services
There are also 12 specialist units that include:
- Physical Preparation and Fitness
- International Perspectives
- Outdoor and Adventurous Expeditions
- Skills for Land-based Outdoor and Adventurous Activities
- Crime and its effects on society
- Command and Control
- The planning for and management of major incidents
- Responding to Emergency Service Incidents

Sports Hall, Strive Fitness Suite, visits/residential to various uniformed services establishments (Army, Royal Navy). Who is the programme for?
Students 16 or over who have definite career aspirations in a sporting environment and who show a high skill level and compete regularly in local/national leagues.

18 units to be completed, 9 in each year of the course.

Who is the programme for?
Students over 16 wishing to enter higher education or pursue a career in sport, related medical professions and science based occupations.
What is the programme structure?
The course programme provides a balance between sport and sporting applications. The programme is modular with each module consisting of approximately 60 guided learning hours. 9 modules will be taken in each of the two years of study.

This course has been designed to be flexible. At the start of your course you will be interviewed by your Personal Tutor and receive a personal learning plan. You will work in small groups and be expected to complete classwork and coursework to meet deadlines.
You will have the opportunity to take part in external visits and undergo work experience/residentials. You will study: Literacy/Communications; Numeracy; ICT; Citizenship; 1 vocational option - Sport & Recreation.

This is a mainly practical course based around the completion of a variety of relevant units, with students producing a portfolio of evidence of their work. It is based on the completion of worksheets, assignments, short presentations and continuous observation of practical performance.
What does the programme include?
The programme includes the following 6 mandatory units:
- Prepare for entry to uniformed services of own choice
- Develop aspects of physical activities
- Refine leadership skills
- Legal implications of physical implications
- Carry out advanced map reading and navigation across open country
- Demonstrate an understanding of current issues.
There are 2 other units to be undertaken. These include:
- Participate in coaching sessions within competitive sports
- Assist in planning and leading adventurous activities
Are there any special facilities for the programme?

Who is the programme for?
Students over 16 wishing to learn basic assistant leadership skills.
What is the programme structure?
The course consists of 6 modules and is examined by continuous assessment.
What does the programme include?
- Development of self-confidence and leadership skills
- Building social and personal skills
- Preparation of students for employment, training or further study
- Extension of students' basic educational skills in communication, numeracy, IT and examination preparation
- Additional Learning Support where appropriate
NVQ Level 1 units include:
- Lead activities within a session
- Help to plan and prepare a session
- Deal with accidents and emergencies
- Help to set up, take down and store equipment
- Help to maintain facility areas
- Help to give good levels of service to participants and customers
NVQ Level 1 units are achieved mainly through work experience, which is undertaken on a half day per week, individually negotiated by the student.
Placements are normally based in primary schools, secondary schools or private leisure clubs/complexes. Assessments are carried out solely in the work environment.

Work Experience

By invitation, additional qualifications include:
- FA Level 1 Football Coaching Certificate
- First Aid Award
Work Experience
