Building Services and Electrical/Electronics
If you want to make buildings into more than just empty shells, then choose a career in Building Services. From energy supplies, heating and air conditioning, security and alarms, it‘s the job of a Building Services Engineer to design, install and maintain these systems.
Choose Electronics and you could be designing, developing and building electronic apparatus for telecommunications devices, computers, medical and scientific equipment to name a few. Our expert tutors will guide you through the workings of circuit boards, electronic principles and fault diagnostics to ensure you have the power to enhance your career.
Building Services courses take place at the Talbot Road site. Electronics courses take place at the Technology Centre.
The completion of 3 core units:
- an introduction to the construction industry
- exploring health, safety and welfare in construction
- the use of science and mathematics in construction
Plus 3 specialist units:
- exploring building services techniques
- performing plumbing operations
- performing electrical operations
Plus an enrichment programme involving site/exhibition visits with an option on outward bound pursuits.
There is a reqiurement to undertake functional skills throughout the programme

This course is designed for school leavers who wish to enter the construction industry as technical apprentices or progress directly to university to study a Building Services Degree.

A BTEC National Diploma is a practical, work-related course. You learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic work situations activities and demands. As well as learning about the employment areas you have chosen, you will learn about the new technology in this area.
The course consists of 5 mandatory units such as Project, Communications, Electrical/Electronic Principles Mathematics and Business Systems plus 12 specialist units. These specialist units cover a wide range of topics from Electronic Circuit Manufacture, Maintaining Computer Systems, Analogue/digital Electronics Measurement/testing and Fault diagnosis, Electrical Installation, Microprocessors, Industrial Instrumentation and a range of Electrical Machines/Power units. The units selected will normally be aimed at providing a balanced spread across different topic areas.
Learning is through a student centred, task based programme using a range of practical/theoretical tasks supplemented with relevent computer software programmes
