Who is the programme for?
Students over 16 wanting to specialise in Photography.
What is the programme structure?
The course runs over 2 years. Each year is split into units; there are 9 in the first year and 9 in the second year. The final part of the course is called the Final Major Project; this gives the student an opportunity to specialise, designing their own project to showcase their skills and creativity developed over the duration of the course.
What does the programme include?
The structure of the course is designed to give students a comprehensive understanding of most aspects of Photography. This will include using both film and digital cameras and associated equipment. Students will learn how to use a black and white darkroom to develop and print their own work, as well as how to use sophisticated image manipulation techniques on Apple Mac computers, using industry standard software.
Projects will provide opportunities to explore studio photography, location photography and experimental image making. As well as specialist photography units, the course encourages all students skills, like drawing, painting and 3D work. There is also an emphasis on idea development, professional practice and learning about the history of photography and art and design.
Example Project:
Students are asked to look at the work of Robert Frank, an influential photographer working in America in the 1950's. He changed the way we use and see photography. The students use traditional 35mm cameras and black and white film to work in his experimental 'shoot from the hip' style. This involves not looking through the lens of the camera, but holding it at waist level and aiming. The end results can be startling, and encourage students to approach photography from an experimental viewpoint. At the end of the project, students submit a research folder that documents Frank's work
and other street photographers, along with a portfolio of images that they have developed, printed and mounted.
Are there any special facilities for the programme?
There is a large, fully equipped darkroom, as well as a modern studio. All students have access to Apple Mac suites with current software applications for editing and processing digital imagery. There are also studio based medium and large format cameras. Many of the staff teaching on the course
are also practising artists/photographers publishing or exhibiting their work nationally and internationally. Students are expected to have their own
DSLR's and 35 mm SLR.
What award will I achieve?
BTEC National Diploma in Photography. This is equivalent to 3 A levels
