The food and drink industry is the UK‘s largest employer with over 2.5 million* people working in a wide range of organisations such as restaurants, hotels, bars and clubs. Our Hospitality courses will give you a taste of the huge range of career opportunities offered by the industry. Within our award-winning commercial restaurant Aspire, industry-designed demonstration theatre and five fully equipped kitchens, you‘ll develop new skills by combining practical sessions with fundamental theory lessons.

Many hospitality companies are international and offer opportunities to work abroad with a vast range of career opportunities available. You may discover a passion for foreign cuisine, hotel management, travel, events, or even running your own restaurant as some of our previous students are now doing!

Level 1 Diploma In Hospitality (14-16)

The Level 1 Diploma in Hospitality will give you a taste of the huge range of opportunities, jobs and career paths offered by the industry. A career in Hospitality could open up the world for you. Many companies are international and offer opportunities to work abroad. Because the sector is driven by customer service, a positive attitude will get you a long way. You may discover a passion for travel, enjoy exotic food, become a top chef or hotel and restaurant owner!

Topics include:

  • Introducing the Hospitality Industry - This introduces you to the basics of the sector showing you the impact that the hospitality industry has on the UK economy and the excitement of working in it.
  • Introducing Customer Service - You'll learn how important customer service is and you'll have the opportunity to practice your skills in the College's award-winning restaurant, Aspire Restaurant Bar.

Developing skills to work in the Hospitality Industry - The Hospitality industry is a 'people based' industry. You'll learn how important your people skills are, not only to the success of the business but in how you work with your colleagues.

Preparing and serving food and beverages - You'll learn about the importance of healthy eating whilst preparing food in one of our specialised kitchens. Just as important, you will also learn about serving food and drinks in Aspire Resturant Bar.

Whilst studying for a diploma, you can develop your interests further by taking specialist courses that relate to your career ambitions. You might choose to learn about marketing, event management or advanced cookery skills. You could choose to learn a foreign language if you want to take advantage of the many opportunities abroad that Hospitality can offer you.

As with all diplomas, you will develop your skills in Maths, English and ICT as these skills are essential for you to be successful in the workplace.

All diploma students will develop personal, learning and thinking skills, such as team-working, creative thinking and self-management. These are also essential in the hospitality industry and vital skills in both life and work.

The Level 1 Diploma in Hospitality will give you the opportunity to do at least 10 days' work experience. This is a great way to use the skills you have learned in the classroom, and experience what work is really like!

During your course, you'll complete a student project to demonstrate the skills and knowledge that you have learned. This could be a written piece of work, such as a report or an investigation, or it could be a practical project.

Level 2 Diploma In Hospitality (14-16)

Hospitality is a large and growing sector in the UK. It covers 14 separate industries, including pubs, bars, nightclubs, hotels and restaurants. The value of hospitality in the UK economy is around £74.2 billion per annum and there are more than 180,000 businesses currently in existence. With an increasing awareness of the environmental impact of foreign travel, more and more people are likely to holiday in the UK in future, increasing demand for high quality hospitality services.

The Diploma in Hospitality will give you a taste of the huge range of opportunities, jobs and career paths offered by the Hospitality industry.

A career in this industry could open up the world for you. Many companies are international and offer opportunities to work abroad.

There are 7 principal learning topics in the Level 2 (Higher) Diploma:

  • Exploring the UK Hospitality Industry - Looking at the importance of the Hospitality industry to the UK, career opportunities and changing trends.
  • Customer Service in Hospitality - You'll learn about the effects of good customer service, why some establishments are 1* and some are 5* and how to obtain and use customer feedback - good or bad! You'll also learn how to deal with customers in our award winning Aspire Restaurant.
  • Working safely in Hospitality - This topic researches how to keep people and places healthy and safe and looks at the impact that not following the law can have on you and your organisation.
  • Working in a Hospitality team - What makes a team and how important is it to work together to achieve your goals? You will learn the answers by learning about team working and effective communication and then practising it in the kitchen or restaurant.
  • Dealing with costs and income in Hospitality - You'll learn the basics of financial operations in Hospitality and the importance of the relationship between income, costs and profits.
  • Providing a Hospitality service - this involves serving a range of food and beverages in Aspire Restaurant and learning about different service methods, cultures and changing trends. An important part of this unit is looking at what sensible drinking and retailing means to the Hospitality industry.
  • Food Preparation and Cooking - In a mixture of theory and practical lessons you'll learn to recognise food and the equipment used in a commercial kitchen, where ingredients come from, food from different cultures and healthy eating.

Whilst studying for a diploma, you can develop your interests further and build up your expertise by taking specialist courses that relate to your personal career ambitions. You might choose to learn about marketing, event management, food and drink service or advanced cookery skills. Multi Skilled Hospitality (14-16)

A career in the hospitality industry can be very rewarding and will take you along paths you may never have considered. Hospitality is a large and growing sector in the UK and it includes bars, hotels, restaurants, nightclubs, events and public service catering in hospitals, schools etc.

The hospitality industry can be very exciting and glamorous, and it will offer you the opportunity to travel and work with thousands of people. Each day is different from the previous creating new challenges and increasing your employment prospects within the industry.

This is your opportunity to begin to discover the hospitality industry and start to gain the experience and skills you will need to prepare you for your career.

This course will give you the knowledge and understanding of a range of skills needed in hospitality. You will gain an introduction to employment in the hospitality industry, enabling you to work safely and to help you develop other valuable skills, giving you greater confidence and helping you find out more about your future direction.

The topics you will be learning about include:

Health and Safety – You will learn about the importance of health and safety and what your rights and responsibilities are.

Effective teamwork - This unit is all about working with your team and your supervisors. You will learn how to organise your work and support your colleagues. During your course, you will also analyse your skills to discover what you need to do to improve your work.

Introduction to Food Hygiene and Safe Practice – Vitally important in the hospitality industry, you will learn how to work safely and hygienically in one of our specialist kitchens and our award winning Aspire Restaurant Bar. You will also explore the reasons for maintaining personal hygiene and how you can do this.

Developing Food Preparation and Cooking Skills – Working in our specialist kitchens, you will prepare and cook a range of foods using a variety of ingredients and equipment.

Developing Food Service Skills – Hospitality is a “people centred” business and customers are at the heart of everything we do. In these units, you will have the opportunity to develop your “people skills” by serving food and drinks to customers in Aspire Restaurant Bar.
