Business Improvement Techniques

This programme focuses upon the tools and techniques of continuous improvement as a means of improving business performance. The implementation of a continuous improvement policy requires the organisation to focus its attention on improving its processes by the elimination of wastes, reducing variation and defect prevention. The improvements must then be maintained through the standardisation and continuous monitoring of the operations.

There are two pathways:

  • Process Pathway

This has an emphasis on the application of lean principles. Lean is about the elimination of all process waste with an emphasis on increasing speed and reducing lead time.

  • Quality Pathway

This has an emphasis on the application of six sigma principles, which concentrate on variation reduction and defect elimination.

Distribution, Warehousing And Storage Operations

This course is made up of eight units, three core and five optional.

Core units

Candidates must choose five optional units which cover areas such as:

  • Stock storage and order processing
  • Promoting products to customers

Electrical & Electronic Servicing

The programme includes:

Engineering (Operations & Maintenance)

The programme includes:

The NVQ programme is modular, and consists of core and optional units. All assessments for the NVQ Level 2 are carried out in College and the NVQ Level 3 is carried out in the workplace. Assessment is continuous by a variety of methods, including observation of practical skills, oral questioning, written tests and projects.

The BTEC National Certificate in Operations and Maintenance is delivered over two years and requires the candidate to attend Trafford College on a day release basis. The course covers topics such as Business Systems for Technicians, Maths for Technicians, Engineering Projects, Health & Safety and Risk Assessments in the Workplace.

Key Skills are embedded into the programme.

The length of the programme depends on the age of the trainee. For those aged 16-18 the course usually takes 36 months.

First Aid At Work

This course is designed to give participants the highest level of First Aid required at work. It will enable the participant to deal with an emergency situation with confidence in a prompt, safe and effective way.
By the end of the course the delegates will be able to:

  • Understand the principles of first aid responsibilities, legalities and reporting.
  • Assess and administer first aid to an injured person including Unconscious casualties, Resuscitation, Heart Attacks, Choking, Poisoning, Fractures, Burns, Head Injuries, Eye Injuries, Sprains, Strains, Shock, Bandaging and Control of Bleeding.  
  • Fulfil the criteria outlined for a First Aid at Work person within the First Aid Regulations.

This course is designed for people who are deemed suitable and are intended to fulfil the role of a First Aid at Work person.

Initial training is completed within 4 days (24 contact hours).
This qualification is valid for 3 years which can be renewed by attending a suitable 2-Day re-qualification course.

A maximum of 12 students can be accommodated on this course and must be aged a minimum of 16 years or above.

We are able to deliver this course on your site, subject to a pre-course assessment of your premises or delivery can be provided at Trafford College campus.


First Aid At Work

This course is designed for people who have already completed their 4 Day First Aid at Work Course and need to complete a Refresher Course to keep their qualification up to date.

Initial training is completed within 2 Days (12 contact hours).
This qualification is valid for 3 years which can be renewed by attending a suitable 2-Day re-qualification course.

A maximum of 12 students can be accommodated on this course and must be aged a minimum of 16 years or above.

We are able to deliver this course on your site, subject to a pre-course assessment of your premises or delivery can be provided at Trafford College campus.


First Aid At Work - Appointed Person Course

This course covers the essential knowledge that is needed for the role of appointed person.

 This course is designed to assist an employer in the provision of a suitably qualified first aid person when the risk has been perceived as being in the category where an appointed person is required.
By the end of the course the delegate will be able to:

  • Render Emergency First Aid to an injured person until medical assistance is available including Heart Attacks, Fractures, Choking, Burns, Shock, Control of Bleeding, Resuscitation, Unconscious casualty.
  • Recognise and appropriately treat most emergency situations

Fulfil the criteria outlined for an appointed person within the First Aid Regulations.

Initial training is completed within 1 Day (6hrs).
Whilst there is no compulsory requirement for retraining, it is normally considered beneficial for appointed persons to have their skills reassessed every 3 years.

A maximum of 12 students can be accommodated on this course and must be aged a minimum of 16 years or above.

We are able to deliver this course on your site, subject to a pre-course assessment of your premises or delivery can be provided at Trafford College campus.


Food Manufacture

Food manufacture is an increasingly competitive market where the quality and safety of products are of prime concern. It is essential that employees are highly skilled and adaptable in their working practises and are highly motivated in their approach to work.This NVQ has been developed with this in mind.

Candidates must complete two core units and six optional units.

Core units

  • Maintain work place food safety standards in food manufacture.
  • Operate safely in food manufacture.

The remaining six optional units are tailored to suit the individual in their own job role. Trafford College is an approved centre for the following two pathways (please note other pathways can be approved as required):

  • Production Control Skills - This is for employees involved in, mixing, batching, heat treatment, chopping, forming, enrobing, and depositing and general tasks similar to these.
  • Distribution Skills This is for employees at the end of the line, perhaps packing the product to a pre-determined pattern or storing, accepting, despatching the product or tasks similar to these.

Laboratory And Associated Technical Activities – Education

This qualification is designed for laboratory technicians working in the education sector and includes the following units:

Level 2

  • Complying with statutory regulations and organisational safety requirements
  • Developing and maintaining working relationships
  • Use laboratory information systems
  • Prepare laboratories for learning activities
  • Maintain laboratory and associated resources
  • Process requests to support learning
  • Calibrate equipment
  • Control stocks of laboratory materials and equipment
  • Contribute to the support of student activities
  • Trial laboratory methods for use in learning activities

Level 3

  • Maintain a healthy, safe and productive work environment
  • Create effective working relationships
  • Provide technical support
  • Contribute to the support of student activities
  • Improve the quality and reliability of the laboratory
  • Control stocks of laboratory materials and equipment
  • Diagnose faults, repair and maintain laboratory equipment
  • Develop and trial new laboratory methods
  • Contribute to the planning of teaching and learning
  • Demonstrate laboratory methods to facilitate learning
  • Carry out investigations
  • Make presentations
  • Developing the research design
  • Assist colleagues, in particular laboratory techniques
  • Manage yourself

Assessment is through portfolio building and there are no exams on this programme. Programmes are flexible, allowing enrolment during any month of the year.

Motor Vehicle Service & Repair

The programme includes:

  • IMI Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Level 2 Certificate and Level 3 Diploma

Ideally suited to any manufacturing operation the NVQ recognises the competence of the workforce and is suitable for all manufacturing sectors. Candidates must complete two core units and four optional units.

Pharmacy Services

Candidates must complete three Core Units and three optional units over a 12 month period.

Core units

  • Assist with the provision of a pharmacy customer service
  • Ensure your own actions reduce the risk to health and safety
  • Support the work of your team

Optional units

  • Order, receive and store pharmaceutical stock
  • Assist with the assembly of prescribed items
  • Assist with the supply of pharmaceutical stock
  • Assist in the supply of prescribed items
  • Assist in the sale of OTC medicines and provide information to customers on symptoms and products
  • Assist with the manufacture and assembly of medicinal products
  • Prepare to make pharmaceutical products
  • Assist with the preparation of aseptic products
