Sports students from Trafford College hit the road this week for the annual HSLA Sports Roadshow to engage hundreds of local primary school children in a range of physical activities and increase their enjoyment of sport through games, and active play.
The event, which is hosted by the College’s ‘Higher Sports Leaders’ students and sponsored by Muller, aims to promote sport in the community while raising money for the HSLA charity ‘Cash for Kids’. Now in its eleventh year, the roadshow was taken out to 8 schools in the area and 20 students from Trafford College helped to organise the programme and participate in the event.
Rebecca Overy, BTEC Co-ordinator and Sports Lecturer at Trafford College, facilitated the event back in 2002 to provide her students completing their ‘Higher Sports Leader Award’ with sports leadership opportunities. Since then over 6000 school children have taken part, with numbers this year reaching more than an incredible 700 children over the four day event!
She commented, “The roadshow is great, not only in helping students develop their leadership, coaching and event management skills, but also for the community at large. With recent reports suggesting there is strong evidence of a link between exercise and academic performance, we hope to demonstrate fun and engaging ways to get children active. Introducing sport in a fun and interesting way gives pupils a chance to learn that sport isn’t all hard work and competition. The College would like to express its gratitude to Muller who sponsor this event every year and provide products for every child taking part. Their support has been invaluable.”
