Rewarding, amazing and memorable – that’s how Stretford campus-based tutors Zoe Davies and Julie Milner summed up their experience of teaching in China over the summer.
The pair travelled to Tianjin (a two-hour drive from Beijing) to undertake CPD with groups of Chinese teachers of various vocational subjects.
Zoe said: “We were teaching 12-14 hours a day delivering English lessons/traditions to Chinese teachers and showing them the kinaesthetic methods and resources we use in England. They were extremely hard, long working days, but incredibly rewarding.
“We each had 32 Chinese teachers in our classes and taught all the six different groups throughout the 14-day period. We’ve certainly gained confidence and fantastic memories from the whole trip.”
As part of their cultural experience, Zoe and Julie were invited to dance ‘in the street’ with the Chinese people who embark in yoga and socialising after work, as well as trips to The Great Wall and The Forbidden City.
Zoe added: “We also taught the students how to play rounders, incorporating team work, rules and speaking English at all times. The care and hospitality we were shown by the staff in China was outstanding and the respect we were shown as teachers was overwhelming. We participated in the closing ceremony which our students included us in and both Julie and I were dancing and singing on the stage. A moment never to be forgotten.”
