Trafford College sport student, Tom Matthews, has scooped a bronze medal in the golf finals of the AoC Sport National Championships.
Tom, who is currently enrolled with the Lee Westwood Golf Academy while studying for his BTEC Level 3 in sport, finished 3rd in the competition at the University of Nottingham, which took place from 20-22 April. He was supported by fellow sport student Zarak Curly, who also qualified for the competitions.
This year’s contest marked the 40th anniversary of the AoC Sport National Championships – a special milestone in the history of this prestigious event.
The competition remains the largest annual student sporting event in the UK, with nearly 1,740 student athletes from further education and sixth form colleges across England, Wales and Northern Ireland taking part this year. Events took place across 13 different sports – including badminton, 7-a-side football, cross country and indoor cricket.
The National Championships are a celebration of competitive sport in further education and sixth form colleges, providing recognition, enjoyment and a unique opportunity for students to compete. College teams and individual competitors can also qualify to represent their region at the Championships through regional tournaments hosted throughout the academic year by AoC Sport.
Damian Harris, Curriculum Leader for Sports Studies said, “This is the first time the college has entered the AoC Sport Championships in golf, and Tom’s result was fantastic. This achievement is testament to the brilliant partnership between Trafford College and the Lee Westwood Golf Academy, and I hope this is the first of many championships successes for both Tom and Zarak. They both played incredibly well and have done themselves and the college proud.”
