The Qualifications
GCSEs (General Certificates of Secondary Education)
GCSEs are the more traditional route of study, combining both exams and coursework. Students will take the mandatory subjects of English, Science and maths along with other subjects to gain a broad understanding of different areas, whilst keeping their options open. Upon completion of their GCSEs students can progess to study either A Levels or a vocational course, the level of study will depend upon their GCSE grades.
Diplomas
Diplomas are designed to give students a fully rounded qualification through a mix of class work, hands-on learning and work experience. Students will select a particular area of study, e.g. Hair and Beauty, and will have the opportunity to gain an insight into this area of work before deciding to commit to a career in it. Students will develop life skills such as teamwork, problem-solving and creative thinking, and at the end of their course could decide to progress within the same sector or into another subject area of their choice. Students will spend one and a half days at College per week whilst also studying functional skills at school in maths, English and ICT (at the appropriate level). Progression from a Diploma could be onto another vocational course at a higher level or if they have the relevant GCSEs they can move onto A Levels.
Practical Learning: Work-ready qualifications
Occupational Qualifications: We offer a range of occupational qualifications which are widely recognised by industry, and act as an excellent foundation for students who are more practical in their approach. These courses are designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge they need to progress onto a particular job, e.g, studying Motor Vehicle to become a mechanic. The qualifications are assessed by assignments and by gaining practical experience in realistic working environments, e.g. a student studying Hospitality will help with food preparation in the College's restaurant. Students will usually attend College for one day per week, and can progress onto another vocational course at a higher level or if they have the relevant GCSEs can move onto A Levels.
Young Apprenticeships: Young Apprenticeships are another option for students progressing into Year 10. They are highly practical with assignments and realistic working environments within College combined with valuable work experience within a company. Learners will attend the programme for 2 days a week over two years, this will include 50 days work experience which will give them the opportunity to develop links with potential employers. At Trafford College students will have the chance to study a Young Apprenticeship in Gas Utilities working with Balfour Beatty plc.
